At a time when the city of Yerres is opening the completely renovated and refurnished Caillebotte house to visitors, we thought it would be interesting to try to identify the paintings (oils and pastels) that Gustave Caillebotte painted in Yerres and its surroundings. To do so, we took as a starting point the work of Marie Berhaut* who, in 1988, published a book listing 447 works. This first book was followed in 1994 by a new revised and expanded edition with the help of Sophie Pietri, in which 565 works were listed and documented..

The exhibition "Caillebotte in Yerres, at the time of Impressionism" presented in Yerres from April 5 to July 20, 2014 revealed some paintings not present in the catalog of Marie Berhaut.

We have modestly tried to synthesize the numerous sources of information at our disposal (see the bibliography in the appendix), to add our own contribution, and to express some doubts about the location of some of these works, with the sole aim of contributing to a better knowledge of Gustave Caillebotte's pictorial production.

In the following table, we have retained, as is customary, the exact catalog numbers and titles appearing in the 1994 edition of Marie Berhaut's work.

The task is relatively complicated by the fact that many of Gustave Caillebotte's paintings were not exhibited in official salons during his lifetime, and are therefore neither dated nor signed, nor are they identified by a title given by the author. After Gustave Caillebotte's death, in order to authenticate the paintings in his studio, his executors, his brother Martial and Auguste Renoir, affixed to the paintings, in the lower right or left-hand corner, a "G. Caillebotte" stamp, which we mention, when it exists, in the list of selected works. Some works are known only through photographs taken by Martial and kept in the family archives to which Marie Berhaut had access.

It is also worth noting that Gustave Caillebotte did not mention the town of Yerres in the title of some of his works until the 4th impressionist exhibition of 1879 with two pastels entitled "Vallée de l'Yerres" N°28 belonging to Mr. E. M. and "Rivière d'Yerres" N°30 belonging to Mr. K., even though the house in Yerres was sold that year. However, in the two previous exhibitions in which Gustave Caillebotte participated, the paintings entitled "Jardin" (second impressionist exhibition 1876) or “Portraits à la campagne" (third impressionist exhibition 1877) were obviously done in Yerres.

Interest in Caillebotte's work continues to generate a great deal of research, as evidenced by the publication in late 2016 of Michael Marrinan's "Gustave Caillebotte painting the Paris of naturalism, 1872-1887," a richly researched 400+ pages work that has the merit of correcting many errors published in previous works.

* Marie Berhaut (1904-1993), a student at the Louvre, devoted her thesis to the painter Caillebotte in 1947. Curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Rennes, she published in 1978 her first catalog entitled "Caillebotte, sa vie et son œuvre, catalogue raisonné des peintures et pastels". [ Caillebotte, his life and work, reasoned catalog of paintings and pastels] After the discovery of new paintings, with the help of Sophie Pietri, she made a new edition, which was published in 1994, one year after her death.
