Verdun, the superlatives
First, the losses: the French lost 378,000 men, including 62,000 killed; the Germans lost 337,000. Among the 378,000 men lost, more than 100,000 disappeared. The majority of them were probably killed. It is estimated that the remains of about 80,000 men remain buried in the ground and have not been found.

The consumption of artillery ammunition reached a peak. The French and Germans fired more than 50 million rounds at Verdun. For example, 938 75 mm cannons fired 7,123,516 rounds. In the February 21 attack, the Germans fired more than two million rounds.
