The end of the battle
On July 11, the Germans, in a last effort, approached within 3 km of Verdun, at the level of Fort Souville, but could not advance any further.

The objectives of Generals Mangin and Nivelle were to retake the forts of Douaumont and Vaux from the Germans. This was achieved for the former on October 23 and the Germans evacuated Vaux on November 2. By December 21, the French had recovered the positions lost in February.

The Battle of Verdun lasted 10 months with no results for either side. Mid-December marked the end of the confrontation between two wills, neither of which wanted to give in.
