The French Grand Quartier Général (GQG) was set up in Chantilly, initially at the Hôtel du Grand Condé. Since the end of November 1914. Later it moved to the Villa Poiret. When Nivelle took command of the French army, he established the GQG in Beauvais. Castelnau was a sort of chief of staff to Joffre.
