The battle until September 1916 |
On the evening of 1st July, Haig was very close to stopping the battle; it was Joffre who put pressure on him not to do so. The battle continued until August with a few interruptions and almost always the same loss rates on other sites: the battles of Pozières, Bazentin Ridge and Delville Wood. From July 1st to 15th, the British lost 100,000 men for minimal gains in terrain.
